After several years of dedicated labor by staff, volunteers, contractors and the City of Walnut Creek, the new greenhouse and nursery facilities are complete. Propagation is ongoing and our nursery regularly houses lots of plant stock for our garden and yours! The first-ever on-site growing facility at The Gardens allows us to more easily and productively grow plants, serve the community and educate the public about nature. Check out a behind-the-scenes tour of our greenhouse and growing facilities below.

“It all starts with a seed…”

The propagation process begins in the greenhouse where we plant thousands of seeds in seeding trays. The plants grow through various phases of development until they’re large enough to be moved over into the nursery, or “shade house,” where they finish their growth cycle and wait to be planted.

Through the in-house propagation process, we’re able to affordably generate plants to refurbish existing garden areas or develop new landscapes for our visitors to enjoy. We also grow plants for local home gardeners.

The Plant Shop

Plant sales have been a crucial part of fundraising for our nonprofit since the very early days decades ago. Revenue raised from plant sales goes directly to support care and maintenance of our garden areas.

Traditionally, The Gardens holds plant sales two times per year — once in spring and once in fall — but during the pandemic, we have shifted our business online for the safety of our community and customers.

Plant sales to the public are currently scheduled year-round ONLINE ONLY. Our full inventory is available on our online plant shop. After purchase, you’ll schedule curbside, contactless pick-up. We hope to resume in-person plant sales some time in 2021.
